Soon, the Catholic church will gather in literal smoke-filled rooms in the Vatican to choose its new pope. I hope they choose someone like Francis, someone not afraid to speak truth to power who might also draw more people like me back into the church.

A Detroit woman is demanding justice after her pet rabbit was killed in what police are calling "a deliberate act of cruelty", which was caught on camera.
Officers responded Friday morning to a call from 28-year-old Alyssa Morgan, who reported her rabbit, Alice, had died. Surveillance footage from a neighboring unit allegedly shows Morgan’s partner placing the rabbit in a sink and spraying it with water for several minutes, despite the animal’s visible distress.
Police described the footage as “clear and unambiguous,” showing what they called “a targeted act of animal cruelty.” The man, whose identity hasn’t been released, is seen walking away after leaving the soaked rabbit behind.
“This was not an accident,” said DPD spokesperson Tameka Hines. “We have evidence suggesting intent.”
Morgan, visibly shaken, called Alice “my best friend, my support system — and now she’s gone because someone wanted to be cruel.” She said the rabbit was healthy and that she had stepped out briefly. Her partner allegedly refused to explain what happened until police arrived.
Intentional animal cruelty in Michigan is a felony, and prosecutors say charges are pending.
“This case is horrific,” said Rachel Klein of the Michigan Humane Law Center. “Cruelty to animals is often a red flag in domestic abuse cases.”
Outside Morgan’s home, a small memorial has formed with flowers, toys, and a sign reading “Justice for Alice.” Morgan says she’s still in shock.
“She trusted him. I trusted him. And now she’s gone.”
